Application Deadline: Sep 1, 2024

The Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences is looking for a Co-Editor-in-Chief to work
alongside current Co-Editor-in-Chief Dr. Martin Krkošek.
The journal
The Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences (CJFAS) is a flagship journal for research on
foundational concepts in fisheries and aquatic science, including both freshwater and marine
environments. First published in 1901, the journal puts out monthly issues comprising mostly Research Articles, but also including Reviews, Perspectives, and Communications. CJFAS supports open science through a progressive data and code availability policy and partnership with Dryad, and has open access agreements with institutions globally. The journal is affiliated with SCAS and the Canadian Society for Ecology and Evolution. CJFAS is owned and published by Canadian Science Publishing, an independent not-for-profit science publisher.
The role
The Co-Editor-in-Chief is responsible for leading the CJFAS editorial board, securing quality journal
content, issuing editorial decisions, shaping editorial priorities, and guiding journal development in
collaboration with their counterpart. This involves:

- being a visionary keen to develop the journal;
- working with the publisher on journal direction and on strategies to enhance the journal’s
reputation and attract high-quality content;
- building relationships and working with journal stakeholders to expand author and reviewer pools
that include more diverse voices and perspectives;
- appointing and working with Associate Editors who represent the diverse disciplines and
populations the journal serves;
- deciding whether to desk reject or to assign manuscripts to Associate Editors (who handle
manuscripts through peer review), then issuing decisions on manuscripts following their
recommendations; and
- holding the journal to a high standard of peer review and ethical best practice in research and
reporting.
The Co-Editor-in-Chief reports to the Executive Editor-in-Chief of Canadian Science Publishing. Co-
Editor-in-Chief is a volunteer role; the publisher will reimburse approved expenses.

experience in fisheries and aquatic sciences;
- is a leader in their research community with a broad network of contacts and collaborators
nationally and internationally;
- is organized and experienced as an editorial board member, a guest editor, or an editor, and is
familiar with trends and norms in scientific journal publishing, including research integrity, peer
review, and publication ethics;
- shares the publisher’s goals to advance open science and to promote equity, diversity, inclusion,
and accessibility within the board, journal, and field;

- is willing to champion the journal within national and international fisheries and aquatic science
communities, with a commitment to outreach to new, previously excluded, or untapped communities;
