Ph.D. or M.Sc. positions in hydrology/hydrogeology modelling

Application Deadline: N/A

PhD or MSc positions in hydrogeological modelling in association with groundwater abstraction. The University of Prince Edward Island, in cooperation with Agriculture and Agri-Foods Canada (AAFC) is seeking graduate students with an interest in pursuing a career in hydrogeology/groundwater modelling. The province of PEI, Canada is 100% dependent on groundwater for all of its domestic and industrial water needs. The students would study the impact of full-scale water abstraction for domestic (city water supply) and agricultural uses (irrigation). Aspects under study would include assessing the capability of groundwater models to predict streamflow changes as affected by groundwater withdrawals, evaluating the suitability of using porous media flow models in fractured sandstone formation, examining the implications of shallow low-capacity wellfields vs. high-capacity wells on groundwater resources, and examining interactions of groundwater abstraction and nitrate movement. The project would incorporate field monitoring of streams and wells in addition to a numerical modelling component. Experience in hydrological or hydrogeological modelling is essential. The successful applicant would enroll in the Environmental Sciences graduate program at the University of Prince Edward Island but would work in collaboration with AAFC scientists. Students must meet the UPEI English language entry requirements to be considered: https://www.upei.ca/admission-requirements/english-language-proficiency-requirements/graduate-programs. Applications including a letter of interest, CV, English proficiency scores, unofficial university transcripts, and the names of three references should be sent to Dr. Mike van den Heuvel, [email protected]. The search will continue until suitable candidates are found.
